In my second tutoring session, I tutored a guy who was writing a Persuasive Essay. When I meet him he didn't have his draft with me him at the time even though he said that he did do. So, I discussed with him his ideas and thoughts regarding the essay and what he included. I came off a bit strong at first a very confident about his work, to a point which seemed like he knew every and didn't need any of my help which was a bit annoying. But I continued with my concerns for his paper on what it was about making sure that he develop a good thesis statement, along with examples and explanations to support his work. From what we discussed and the notes he wrote down as I was explains certain things to him, he knew exactly what he wanted to say in his essay. The only thing that he seemed to have an issue with is developing his Works Cited page, which is natural. I gave him several resources and websites that he could refer to that would give him examples on how to create a Work Cited page from numerous sources and he seemed happy about that which was good. Overall, I was glad that was able to focus on the HOC's with him concerning his paper for the session to be successful.
In my third tutoring session, it was by far the BEST session that I in countered thus far. The student seemed excited to have me help her with her assignment as seemed very opened to my ideas. The student that I tutored was from English 101, writing a essay about discrimination and disable people. I was quit surprised when I read her essay, because usually I have to help students develop their ideas and give examples with there essay, but her essay was well written. She gave examples from multiple sources to support her argument, along with involving her personal experiences. The only issue that she had was putting her paragraphs in the right order so it can flow easily and not be all over the place. I also worked with her on tweeking, her thesis statement to make it stronger, allowing the reader to get a preview on what her essay is going to be about. Also, another thing that I liked that made the session go so well, is that the student asked questions, sharing her ideas, thoughts and concerns with me making this a method of Collaborative Learning. One major concern with her was including in text citation in her essay, but also developing her Work Cited page in MLA format. I also gave her a few websites to refer too, but I also recommended her to go to the Writing Center after she has revised her essay and get some more feedback on it because it can be very useful to her. At, the end of the session she asked me for my e-mail address so she can e-mail me the revised copy of her essay, and I gladly gave it to her and told her that I don't mind giving her additional feedback to ensure that this essay is successful.
